OK its not quite New Year yet but..

"We have gone the year through and now we stand at the cusp of a new one,
a time when family and friends are second to none.
When old friends rejoice in the rekindling of old friendships
and new ones light the fires that may last a lifetime.
To the past year and the new, yours, theirs and mine."

well the new LOTR film is out, The Return of The King, and I've managed to put off seeing it until after I finished the book again...and
on top of that there's the Vivendi Universal game of Middle Earth
Online, which will allow everyone to go and be their favourite
character!

hey there all...this is a message for one of my Friends, who from what
I can gather from the tone(?) of some text msgs, is a little under the
weather....

when you're down and troubled and need some loving care,
and nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there,
To brighten up even your darkest night.
-Carole King

just like it says kid...

in the tradition of Spiderman, The Hulk,
Batman and (the now shelved) Superman, we have another classic tv show
making a move to the big screen in the next 6-9 months with
Thunderbirds (view trailer [Quicktime Req'ed])

why oh why can't microsoft do something like this for windows(you want the Looking Glass Review)? combine it with the G-Windows(i
was sure that I had put an article up about that) thats in their
research labs and you have a full on "Minority Report"-esque user
interface, and once you hook it all up to one of those nice Hitachi On-Glass
display systems & a data projector....although my next question
is...could you put the polymer layer on both sides, hook up 2
projectors and have the display visible on bother sides?

i remember this when it was just a simple online "game" to create a walker, now it has been organised into a competition and a mechanism for testing human developed AI with Computer developed AI

an interesting lecture by Umberto Eco about books and where they'll go from here, on Al Ahram

keeping on with the astronomical theme of the last post, an article in Christian Science Monitor,
theorises that our nearest galaxy is not Andromeda but is actually
colliding with the Milky Way at the moment! Not sure if I believe it.
--------

having seen Master & Commander earlier in the week, this website came up (via BoingBoing) about replica instruments for various astronomical tasks

Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know."
i first heard this quote by Donald Rumsfeld as part of a cabaret show I did a couple of months ago, and now the Plain English Campaign have awarded him the "Foot in Mouth" award for it. Other Categories of Award are: Plain English (Open); Inside Write(For Internal Govt. Documents); Media(Radio/TV & newspapers); Golden Bulls(for gobbledygook) and the Plain English Web Award. On of my personal favourites is:
Marks and Spencer for a 'food to go' salad label The label said 'roast chicken salad', but had a special flash on it saying 'Now with roast chicken'. So what was in it before?'

Sentiments of my friend who broke a tooth and had to get emergency dental work:

Emergency appointment: £50
Temporary dressing: £28
Exammination (18th Dec): £50
Removal: £26/tooth
Still paying National Insurance: Worthless

i'm jealous..couple of my friends went off to see the Levellers @ QM last night...gits! anyway, went to see "Master and Commander: Far Side of the World"
last night, and it was much better than I was expecting, very graphic
in places and some parts could even be classified as nauseating but
really captured the essence of life at sea and the sacrifices that had
to be made...once again going to seriously look out that tall ship
sailing experience

i'm in a much better

i'm in a much better mood than I was since the last post (however that
still leaves me sitting at about -8 out of 10), and surprisingly
passionate about something...as i have a new toy
to play with at work that will allow me to create a really, rich
application for all of our students...hopefully I'll be able to develop
various back end systems to allow me to create a front end that will
run anywhere, is user customisable and automatically updated. and with
the built in payments system it might even be possible to allow users
to access courses only after paying for them...maybe give them a couple
of days chance to access it...there are lots of possibilities, and as
its all flash based, it shouldn't be too difficult to have run in a
normal browser as well...
Its definately one of the perks of working at a uni: i get a chance to
"play" with stuff and develop new applications for both new
technologies as well as older ones....and get paid to do it too!
