January 2004 Archives
Not had anything to put up recently, life's generally been quite quiet.
Just got back from Leeds area, where I spent Chinese New Year with some
friends...eating lots and lots of seafood and curry...hmm very nice, so
just back to work on Monday morning, and see what interesting things
come up.

its nice that we're gonna help out the americans after our probe is, as one of my friends put it so eloquently, "lying upside down in a ditch somewhere".

hey to trouble...no hitting your collegues tomorrow! :-p

oh the other thing i'm playing with is Activeworlds
which is a 3d multiuser environment. Its almost what I'm trying to do,
but doesn't have any method for interacting with other people (ie you
can't give stuff to other people or carry stuff) anyway got a couple
more days left before they'll start charging me, and haven't quite
decided whether or not to stay...made a cool house and would be a shame
to lose it..but...
Still would be nice if I could get my hands on the source code to play
with...
Back to the previous post, i'm thinking that it'll be strange trying to
write (effectively) a non-violent mod for quake. also i think i'll be
somewhat limited to 32 users in a server at a time (must check) and
that the mapping tools are not necessarily the easiest to create
worlds. but on the upside anyone would be able to run a server on their
machine. gonna have to work out how to configure the various physics
options, and making it so that they can be loaded from a custom library
(rather than recompiling the whole thing)....basically trying to write
an entire game engine that can be "tweaked" easily by the user...a
challenge i think.

hmmph, don't you just love it when you dig out a piece of code that
some else has written, and instead of it running like it should, you
have to try and debug it....well It happened to me...so if anyone reads
this and happens to have played with the .NET framework version of
Quake2 and is getting a NullReferenceException when starting the game
(ge->RunFrame) and have sorted it let me know! If not i'll just go
back to trying to hack c++.
Still that said I have plans, the auto downloading stuff looks like it
may well deal with some of the things I'm wanting to do with it...we
shall see!

wahey, the Churchill dog has been upgraded to what appears to be a cgi
feature, up from the old style traditional nodding dog.

no updates for a while as i've been stuck in the technological styx
that is my mum's house in Edinburgh, so I guess the first thing to do
is to wish you readers (all one of them), a happy new year...
HAPPY NEW YEARIf you were watching the TV you
probably saw that the Edinburgh Hogmanay celebrations were cancelled at
the last minute (about 30mins before they were due to start), and my
celebrations weren't quite as expected. Combine that with some other
bits and pieces it was not a very happy new year. So to all of those
who were on the other end of my being narked the subsequent afternoon,
apologies. I want to take a moment for one of my friends, in Edinburgh,
and all of her friends who are having a worse new year than me. All I
can say is, you reminded me that no matter how bad I think my life is,
there is always some one who has to deal with worse, and that you have
my sympathies in your loss.
