May 2004 Archives

Well after going to the police and filing a report, and then getting
that paperwork back from them and passing it on to O2, they've decided
that they're not going to replace the phone because it was an
unattended theft, so in otherwords if it wasn't strictly in my
possession or near me when some one lifted it doesn't count...for f***s
sake...
and it gets better, they won't let me get use my upgrade that I used (a
month ago no less) to replace that handset, i'd have to pay the full
whack (all £600odd of it),suffice to say that I will be leaving O2 at
the end of this contract...only 11months to go...
--------

A funny article (at least I thought so) on El Reg, proposing what life
would be like in 15 years under the Blunkett ID card scam...er sorry
scheme.
--------

In keeping up with my interest in the Beeb allowing access to their
archives there's this article (originally posted on BoingBoing), which
says that they are going to release stuff under a Creative Commons
License.

well its been quite a constructive day, been working on the shows (ok
that's a bit mad at the moment) and have brought up an IRC server at
work (no I'm not posting it here for you all to start logging into it,
if you want in then email me!) and on top of that have set up an
operator bot to keep things going nicely, and even made got to go to
the pub with a beautiful woman...sorted...guess I just have to decide
what i'm going to do tomor...err today. think the only thing that i
didn't do (and it's quite important now that I think about it) is pass
on a message to one of my collegues...but I'm going to try to make it
into work on time
tommorrow and sort it out. Actually just remembered, was getting the
bus home today and saw something I thought was quite humourous..this
guy walked in front of the bus (it was stopped) and from the very back
of his collar there was what appeared to be a wrapper from a
MacDonald's straw sticking out...like an antenna...well it made me
smile...he seemed totally oblivious to it. there was something else
that made me laught today as well but I can't remember it just now.
oh and if i've not mentioned it yet...I get paid tonight!!!!yay!
--------

The archives list in the side bar was getting just a little bit too
long for my liking so I've re-archived everything on a monthly basis,
which gives a nice short list (at the moment at any rate)
--------

also decided that the best time for me to get anything done is after
0000GMT(well BST but who's picky)...those circadians eh?
--------

I've managed to misplace my phone, which is really annoying for a
number of reasons:

  1. It has all my phone numbers in it (minor point as it synchs(sorry synced) with my 'puter

  2. It has a whole load of software that I'd acquired and its gonna be
a pain to recover some of them (mainly cos I can't entirely remember
    what was on it)

  3. It has photos of other people on it, and they're attached to phone numbers

  4. It was fairly f***ing new...

So i'm feeling really...er..undressed. It's very strange to be without
my phone, especially when it's been such a intrinsic part of me for so
long (not this particular one but....). I think I've left it somewhere
in the University of Strathclyde, hopefully not out in the hallway, so
hopefully some nice academic/university type person will have noticed
it, picked it up and will drop it into the security desk tomorrow.
Failing that it'll be a couple of days of...ohhhh...peace and quiet. At
least until I get O2 to send me a new one....

Once again another link is up on the sidebar, although this time its
not that interesting, merely a re-instatement of the link to The Border Guard at the Edge Of Sanity
which is my theatre related blog.
--------

Another story about scamming a scammer...I *love* these things...they
give me a nice warm feeling inside...
--------

Was trying to find an ATOM feed button to stick up on here (since
Blogger now has a ATOM feed function) and found this resource of logos

A couple of good stories on BoingBoing
today, including a story about a bomb scare at a US airport, caused by
a broken MP3 player and a Soda can. Definately think the level of
paranoia is far too high in the states at the moment (ok it is kinda
understandable here but it's a general statement).
--------

i was playing this game a little back when I was still at uni (as a
student) and have now kinda gone back to it. I always did like the idea
that you had to qualify to use the weapons that you wanted to use,
rather than just being able to pick em up and use it. That said the
medic training is quite a cool idea (you sit an actual exam in game!)

Having just read Eastern Standard Tribe
and its basis on Circadian rhythms and such, this web site was in "The
Metro" this morning. Answer the questions and it'll produce a graph
showing when your energy levels will dip, and you'll feel tired.
Brought to you by Proplus(Live life without dropping off...) so of
course they're product makes an appearance in the tips to combat
tirednes, but its fairly inconspicuous.
--------

And another one, this time a drum machine...very, very cool...I
especially like the little loading anim, with the butterfly.
--------

I was sent this uri by a friend.Weebls Stuff - Toons.
Any British person should find this amusing...the poking fun at a very
well known (and well respected) astronomer (Sir) Patrick Moore...
--------

Just finished re-reading Eastern Standard Tribe by Cory Doctorow (whom
I'm sure that you all know from BoingBoing.
Definately worth a read. And its released free under a Creative Commons
License (actually that reminds me that this Blog is under a CC licence
but I've lost it when the site template changed)
--------

hmmm i might have misread the stats the last time I looked at the votes
for the People's Choice for the Humor Webby Award, as Red Vs. Blue got
beat by The Onion.
Oh well, it is good...shame though. And on a related note, there was
meant to be a RVB short made for the Barenaked Ladies tour...but we
didn't get it over here! If anyone knows if it is available anywhere
online (as i think the tour is now over) and if anyone thinks i'm
trying scam them out of valuable materials, well I have my ticket stub
for the gig! I WAS CHEATED :-)

Just realised with this "Hello" software can upload pictures here. So here's that img of the article about "Caterpillar" shoes that I talked about earlier Posted by Hello

Just got out of a day in the theatre (see here
for more info on the rehearsals for Deus Ex Quanta) where I've been
doing Front of House for one of the Big Big Country gigs in Glasgow.
Tonight we had the Asylum Street Spankers, who were really, really
good. All the way from Austin, Texas (which really had one of my cast
going). Anyway good music, they all seem like quite cool people, though
my Stage Manager (SM) thinks that Wammo was trying to pull her...join
the end of the queue mate ;-)
[Update] Well really just a continuation of a thought process; was
talking with my SM in (outside really) the pub today about what we want
to do with our lives (one of those deep, meaningful conversations that
you only seem to have in a pub, or drunk out of your face) and we're
both into the whole English thing, she's thinking about writing or
journalism, and I just like the way that Language thing can roll around
your mouth and I've always been told that the first thing you should do
is just start writing. There is a point to this, I'm just thinking that
I probably should actually make an effort and review this gig, but to
be perfectly honest I can't be bothered (its nearly 0000) and I've been
working since round about 1000. But something like that would probably
be a good start....

Just been digging through the stats for this blog and came across this
referrer link (its sad yes I know but) Versione tradotta della pagina http://mysparebrain.blogspot.com/ (BETA)
It appears that some one has hit the page and translated it into
Spanish. Of course I doubt it made much sense. If this was you! Post me
a comment, I'd love to know why you hit this page.
--------

Well my mate was nice enough to ask if he could link here (on that
basis I now have at least 2 readers) so here's one back to him. It's
actually quite interesting full of electrical/power engineering stuff,
and any thing else...he was talking about Cocroft-Walton(?)
stacks...complete with diagrams. he's a complete nutter. Anyway I'll
get round to putting a static link on the Side Bar at some point...if I
remember.

finally got a copy of the "Everything for Everyone" gig in Glasgow on
the 5th May 2004...very cool! If you want a copy you can buy it online (along with all the other gigs)

well I posted about
the Barenaked Ladies interview on Radio2 the other day, and
unfortunately it's not available on the BBC Audio on Demand pages :-(
hopefully it'll appear on the Janice Long Sessions page in the near
future, if nit if anyone out there happened to record the session I'd
appreciate a copy

Walking With Dinosaurs © BBCi've been doing some digging on the speech that Greg Dyke made about making the BBC's archives available to all for free (non-commercial) use, which I thought was a great idea. Having heard nothing about it since I've managed to dig up this article on the BBC news web site which says what's happening: Natural History clips of up to 3mins in length will become available first, and then (if there's sufficient popularity) other genres will go up...here's hoping
--------

well lets see if this works, i've enabled comments on this blog...
--------

just caught the end of the BareNaked Ladies Interview on Radio 2, with a Blue Grass version of "One Week"...very cool
--------

found a nice article via boingBoing about shoes, so there's one about tire shoes and another which I'll upload somewhere which is about making wooden soled shoes.
